Maypole’s Sliced Bread: Clean, Delicious and Healthy

There’s no doubting the fact that Maypole’s sliced loaves are absolutely delicious. But, as Jo Caruana discovers, the fact that Maypole’s White & Brown loaves are also completely free of additives and preservatives makes them even more enticing!

Sliced bread is a truly staple of so many meals. Whether toasted in the morning and topped with an egg, served as a sandwich with your choice of fillings, dipped in a delicious olive oil and balsamic bread dip or simply enjoyed as an accompaniment to a bowl of soup or a salad, there is something deliciously comforting about sliced bread.

The important (and pleasing!) thing to know is that sliced bread is also healthy, and it can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet. The Maltese Food-based dietary guidelines for Adults (2016), recommend the consumption of 1-2 servings of bread and other cereal products with each meal in addition to a selection of nutritious foods from the other food groups in a healthy, Mediterranean way; fruits and vegetables, dairy, lean meat, fish and other alternative protein sources

“Bread is a fantastic source of carbohydrates,” says Maypole’s in-house Dietitian & nutritionist Ryan Gauci. “It fills you up, gives you energy and also contains important nutrients and dietary fibre. Eaten in moderation it can be an important part of your diet, as well as being easy to prepare and full of potential as there’s so much you can do with it!”

Sliced Bread

Maypole’s sliced bread has been a well-loved part of its portfolio for years. In fact, whole generations have grown up eating and enjoying it thanks to its delicious texture and flavour. But did you know that Maypole’s white and brown sliced loaves actually go one step further when it comes to ensuring you feed your family the best possible product? That’s became both the bakery’s white and brown sliced loaves are ‘100% natural’ – which means they are completely free of additives and preservatives. Instead, Maypole’s bakers have come up with an all-natural recipe that ensures their bread tastes just as good, while being so much better for you.

“Additives and preservatives have been linked to a number of health issues, so we all know we should avoid them,” says Maypole’s food technologist Pietro Carbone, who helped develop the recipe. “For instance, our bread is free of chemical anti-mould and does not contain chemical emulsifier and stabilser to enhance its softness. Instead our recipe has been handed down through the generations and is more traditional; it harks back to the days when additives didn’t even exist! By using naturally-occurring enzymes to achieve the same results the outcome is an all-natural product that can be enjoyed in the knowledge that it doesn’t contain anything nasty.”

So, if you want to serve you and your family a product you know is bursting with goodness – and nothing else – then choose Maypole’s 100% natural label white or brown sliced bread. It truly is a slice of quality.

A Slice of Inspiration

You know you want bread for lunch, but how can you make that meal choice extra nutritious as well as delicious? “There are some really tasty sandwich fillings to choose from,” says Maypole’s in-house Dietitian & nutritionist Ryan Gauci. And many of them can help you to enjoy a more balanced diet. Here’s some inspiration!”

  • Greek salad: Mix together tomatoes, cucumbers, feta cheese and black olives, and add to brown bread. Fresh and delicious!
  • Avocado egg mayo: As an alternative to egg mayo, use avocado instead of mayo – it’s just as creamy but far more nutritious. Mix boiled eggs with mashed avocado and serve on brown bread.
  • Caprese: A simple mix of mozzarella cheese, tomatoes and fresh basil on brown bread makes for the perfect lunchtime snack.
  • Turkey delight: Turkey slices are packed full of protein and very healthy. Top white bread with one slice of turkey, a couple of apple slices and some Brie for a very interesting spring-time mix!
  • Salmon and Chive Topper: Place freshly cooked salmon mixed with low-fat cream cheese and herbs on a bed of lettuce for a healthy, low fat brown sandwich filling.

Did you know that you can freeze sliced bread? Then simply defrost or toast it for a convenient mealtime solution. And for extra ease, freeze your bread in two-slice packs so you don’t have to pull the bread apart once it’s frozen. Easy!
